Is it cheaper to let the heat run all the time?

When it comes to energy bills during the winter, homeowners and apartment dwellers alike have the same concerns: "Should I just leave my heat on all day? What about when I'm at work? Should I set the programmer to come on at certain times? What is the most energy-efficient? The most cost-effective?"

We understand that people are always looking for ways to cut costs and stay warm — and we encourage that! Check out this blog post on some common heating mistakes made during the winter, then keep reading for a more in-depth exploration into how the adjustment of your thermostat affects your utility bills and how Drew's Crew Heating & Air can help you and your home's heating system!

We suggest that you set your heating timer and thermostat, so your home is warm only when you want it to be. It is the cheapest way to heat your home and keep it at the temperature you want.

Won't my heating system use a lot of energy to power up when it's cold?

Your heating system indeed takes a certain amount of energy to kick-start. However, it also takes energy to maintain the heating at a level temperature all day and all night. When you leave the heat on all the time, you must take into account the fact that some heat is lost. The longer you keep the heating switched on, the higher the total amount of heat is escaping.

What about insulation?

If your home is poorly insulated, your heating system could be using energy all the time to maintain a constant temperature. Hot air can escape through the windows, doors, the floor. Sealing drafty doorways, installing heavy window curtains, and receiving routine HVAC maintenance are all ways you can improve your home's insulation.

Everyone in my home needs heat at different times. What can we do to lower our heating bill?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lowering your heat 7 to 10 degrees for about eight hours a day may save 10% of your energy costs every year.

While there are measures everyone should take to lower their utility bill, HVAC appliances don't last forever. For more information about our heating installation or repair services, contact Drew's Crew Heating & Air today!
